Football in Argentina and Leo Messi hatred

This will be my first attempt at blogging about soccer or more like about ‘football’. I still don’t know why Americans call it soccer when the rest of the world calls it “football”. Even in Spanish the word for football is ‘futbol’ which is the phonetic adaption of the football word.

stadiumHere in Argentina football is like a religion. You may think that the NFL and NBA are big in the US and that fans are passionate, but it pales in comparison to Argentinian fans and the culture surrounding football. It’s absolutely crazy and dozens of fans die each year in clashes between the ‘barras bravas’ which are the supporting fans for each football team. I’ve only been to one match so far to watch River Plate as one of my uncles has year long tickets. The Super Bowl is nothing compared to the high end football matches in here. I’m taking of Rover Plate vs Boca Juniors or Racing de Avellaneda vs Independiente. Not that I am a hardcore football fan but I truly was scared when I went to see the football match of River Plate against some team I don’t remember. I can only imagine what it would be like when the top teams play against one another…

It isn’t just the fans that get all the aggressive heat. Football players get crap too from the fans and I ain’t talking of letters forwarded to the football players of fans complaining and all that. I’m talking of a group of supporters waiting at the gates for the football players armed with guns and machetes.

boca juniorsAfter the defeat of Argentina against Chile in the Copa America (American Cup), Leo Messi got a lot of crap from fans. They complained that Leo Messi was giving all his efforts to his team at Barcelona instead of playing hard with the ‘albiceleste’ (the name for the Argentinian national football team). The truth is that Leo Messi wasn’t the worst player playing for Argentina, that honor would go to Gonzalo Higuain who is by far the worst forward that I’ve seen play at any elite football club. There were also other Argentininian players who were crap during the Copa America but most of the hatred and anger was focused on Leo Messi since he was the team captain and the best football player in the world. The reasoning is that if you’re the best football player in the whole planet, you should be awesome during each and every match, even if it requires you to kill yourself during winter when the football season in Europe is over and you’ve played over 50 football matches during that year. I mean it’s only an extra 6 matches to each the final for the Copa America, so it would not be a massive extra effort, right?? What do I know, I’m just an Argentinian brought up in the States and just trying to connect with my ancestry by living here… Us yanks aren’t supposed to know about football according to Argentinians. Anyway…

stadium during football matchI blame the failure of Argentina at the Copa America on not playing as a group. Leo Messi is by far the best player while the rest of players are just mediocre. Maybe Tevez and Aguero are a bit higher in terms of skill and experience, but the rest of football players for Argentina are just mediocre. Take into account that Argentina did reach the finals so obviously they did something right. And that ‘something’ was using Leo Messi whenever problems would arise. IN other words Leo Messi was burnt, over-trained and tired of having to rescue his team when shit hit the fan.

The stupidity of fans here is so big that they have sent death threats to Leo Messi. He had to leave Buenos Aires as soon as he came back from Chile where the Copa America was played. The newspapers were blaming Leo Messi for the failure of Argentina. They went as far as to question Leo Messi’s nationality saying that he didn’t feel like an Argentinian and that he didn’t have the ‘huevos’ (spanish word for ‘balls’) that is required to play when representing your country. The funny thing is that the whole team lacked balls when it came to giving their all on the pitch. But everyone in Argentina expects Leo Messi to be the best of the best while playing for the national team. Well I’ve got news for you folks… Messi is a human being, not a robot.

Chatting with one Cool Aussie Band

Magic Dirt emerged from the scene of Geelong, a satellite city about 30 minutes southwest of Melbourne, Australia in 1993. Their penchant for crossing pop melodies with a garage noise aesthetic quickly earned them a large hometown following. The rest of Australia soon caught up.

Dean (bass/vocals), Adalita (guitar/vocals), Daniel (guitar), & Adam (drums) had one ambition- to play with other cool bands. It took just three gigs for the word to get out that Magic Dirt had to be checked out. After a handful more shows their phones were ringing and the offers were flying in.

Although they do enjoy a free drink as much as the next kid, the band wisely decided that songs mattered way more than schmooze. They turned their back on the overtures and decided to take the time to enjoy making music and to develop as a band.

Are there any plans for upcoming tours?

concertAdalita: At the moment we are working on a new record and hopefully we’ll be touring for the record early next year.

How does it feel coming around to your 10th anniversary?

Adalita: It feels so amazing. I can’t believe we’ve lasted this long and I feel extremely lucky to still be a part of the music scene. I kind of feel all young again.

      How did you all meet?

Adalita: Dean and I used to go out and we lived with Daniel and we used to jam in our bedroom by the beach. It was very idyllic and then through mutual music friends we met Adam and the rest!

Are you currently recording demos for the new album that is being released at the end of this year?

Adalita: Sure are. It’s been such a wild ride already. We are chomping at the bit. I can’t tell you excited we are and how with every passing second we get more and more excited. I’ve been grinding my teeth at night for the past 12 months.

Will the new album feature the song Brat, which has been played at a few live shows this year?

      Adalita: Yes it will.

What is your connection with the band Moler?

Adalita: (Because they are the evil scientists in the ‘Supagloo’ film clip) Yeah. Only Helen Cattanach from ‘Moler’ appear in ‘Supagloo’. The other evil scientists are Geoff from ‘SixFtHick’ and a friend of ours.

How many times did you have to go through the car wash on the Redhead film clip?

Adalita: It was 6am and they put about different things in my hair like henna, red food dye and other stuff. We all went through the car wash about 10 or 11 times. It was fun but in the end it’s hard to see Adam. It’s a very loved clip. I always get comments about that one. It was actually our very first video.

Where do you get the inspiration/ideas for your lyrics and music?

Adalita: From life… people. I take everything in and I am very sensitive to a lot of stuff so it all gets stored up inside and mushed around and then somehow it comes out in a song. Most of the time I am quite unaware of what I am singing about but I know that it makes me feel a certain way. And then when it’s all out there I love how it’s open to interpretation by the listener.

What are your own personal favourite tracks on your albums and why?

Adalita: I don’t have any favourites because I don’t really listen to them but I would say that I love the epics like ‘Now or Never’ and the instrumental version of ‘Babycakes’.

Adalita you are seen as an icon in the music industry, how do you feel about female groups such as ‘Skulker’, ‘Lash’, ‘Nitrocris’ and female artists such as Connie Mitchell from ‘Primary’ and Sarah McLeod from ‘Super Jesus’?

Adalita: It feels great to be able to hang out with other female artists and have a drink and talk about music and dresses, lipstick and ways to enlighten a mostly male dominated industry. Sadly ‘Nitocris’ have disbanded but there are still many female musicians out there. I just wish there were more girls upfront singing or playing a guitar and really belting it out and going hard. I get a bit disappointed that the main forum offered to a woman is that of a “pop chanteuse”. It gets a bit sickening. I think ‘Lash’ have heaps of potential and more girls rocking on stage in general please!

How many guitars have you smashed?

Adalita: Probably too many. All my guitars, even my brand new baby, have been smashed against something and some didn’t quite make it. I got given a massive bag of weed back in ’93 when I completely destroyed my Maton Ibis guitar. It split into a million matchsticks.smashed

Will the band be performing in the 2003 Big Day Out?

Adalita: Don’t know yet. I bloody hope so.

Where did the name “Magic Dirt” originate from?

Adalita: Our first guitarist came up with two words he strung together. I wish there was a crazy story to the name but there isn’t. People think it’s got something to do with drugs. Like magic mushies or something. I like when people come up with their own take on it.

Any words for our gay readers?

Adalita: Love yourself, love life, believe in yourself and don’t take shit from anyone!

Sharing some time with a Rocker Girl – Part Two

So do you have a sexual preference?

Cheyne: I don’t have a sexual preference, my partner happens to be a male but I’m certainly not with him cause he’s male there are qualities that I love about him, you know? I would have recognized him in any body! It wouldn’t have mattered… I’ve known him before and I recognized him the first time I met him, I would have recognized him if he was in a male body or a female body.lol pic

Do you have a message to all the young gay and lesbians out there that either do or don’t listen to your music?

Cheyne: Stop trying to define yourself as any kind of particular sexuality! You are not defined by whom you fuck! You are not defined by a word, that’s opposed on you by to some extent of society but ultimately yourself, if you call yourself a thing then you will be a thing.

If you’re Susan… then your not gay… you’re Susan! Simple!… and who you fuck is your business it does not define how you live your life or how other people see you, you don’t let other people perceptions to define who you are!

What’s your opinion on IVF treatment and same sex marriage?

Cheyne: I wrote a letter to John Howard, cause I’m watching this article on TV where Mr.Howard is saying that lesbian women aren’t allowed to have children, and I’m yelling at the TV! I was going wild! The last sentence of the letter I wrote was, “If John Howard’s got his chin out for a fight, then he just got one!”… It was fuming… wild… I mean… what a fucking imbecile!!!

To think that who you fuck defines your parenting skills!!! Explain to me what one has to do with the other!?! And what about this… how many abused children come from gay and lesbian families? Show me the fucking statistics to back up the reason he is allowing this to happen! It’s fucking crap and they can’t do it!

All the abused kids are coming from fucking heterosexual families!

Ultimately it’s about the child! If the child is in a good environment and if that means that its a girl/girl relationship or a boy/boy relationship whatever, if the child is in a loved, healthy environment.. So be it! I would rather my child, If I was going to adopt a child I’d rather it to nurtured within a gay relationship than a male/female relationship when he’s an alcoholic… beats her… beats the kid or abuses that little girl or whatever it might be… it just is… fucking ridiculous!

That anyone can think that parenting skills have anything to do with whom you fuck!

Wow… but you don’t believe that it’s important to have an equal influence of a male/female role model in a child’s life?

Cheyne: Oh yeah I do! But the most important thing is being loved isn’t it!? There are thousands… millions… of children around the world with male and female role models that are being abused, and they are given cigarette burns and beatings, they are killed and they are being sexually molested! I mean… how many examples do you need?!
